خواجه شمس‌الدین محمد بن بهاءالدّین محمد حافظ شیرازی (زاده ح. ۷۲۷ (قمری) – درگذشته ۷۹۲ (قمری))، معروف به لسان‌الغیب، ترجمان الاسرار، لسان‌العرفا و ناظم‌الاولیا شاعر بزرگ سدهٔ هشتم ایران (برابر قرن چهاردهم میلادی) و یکی از سخنوران نامی جهان است. بیش‌تر شعرهای او غزل هستند که به غزلیات حافظ شهرت دارند. گرایش حافظ به شیوهٔ سخن‌پردازی خواجوی کرمانی و شباهت شیوهٔ سخنش با او مشهور است. او از مهم‌ترین تأثیرگذاران بر شاعران پس از خود شناخته می‌شود. در سده‌های هجدهم و نوزدهم شعر های حافظ به زبان‌های اروپایی ترجمه شد و نام او به گونه‌ای به محافل ادبی جهان غرب نیز راه یافت. هرساله در تاریخ ۲۰ مهرماه مراسم بزرگ‌داشت حافظ در محل آرامگاه او در شیراز با حضور پژوهشگران ایرانی و خارجی برگزار می‌شود. مطابق تقویم رسمی ایران این روز را روز بزرگ‌داشت حافظ نامیده‌اند.
حافظ که برای علاقه مندان ادبیات فارسی و شعر فارسی اسمی آشناست مورد تایید و ادیبان و محققین خارجی هم بوده است. علاقه شدید گوته به حافظ برای ما ایرانی ها بسیار آشناست. نقادان ادب جهان ، ژان ولفگانگ گوته را یکی از ارکان چهارگانه ادب جهان نام داده اند و چنین شخصیتی با شیفتگی و دلبستگی درباره حافظ فراوان گفته است :« ای حافظ ، آرزوی من آن است که فقط مریدی از مریدان تو باشم » ..
علاوه بر گوته نیچه علاقه زیادی به شعر های حافظ داشت. اشعار حافظ تکان دهنده و اموزنده است و قلب هر انسانی را هدف می گیرد. حافظ روی زبان فارسی و ادبیات ایران تاثیر زیادی داشت.
