The Government of India during the 1950s introduced the Craftsmen
Training Scheme under which a series of government-managed
Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and privately-run Industrial
Training Centers (ITCs) were set up across the varied Indian
states. The objective was to develop a pool of skilled manpower
resources for meeting the labor requirements of the country’s
varied industries.
The ITIs and ITCs are deemed as post-secondary schools; and are governed by the Directorate General of Employment & Training (DGET) the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship the Union Government of India. Presently in India there are more than 14000 vocational training centers that include over 2000 ITIs and over 12000 ITCs.
The management affairs of the technical training centers are overseen by the National Council of Vocational Training (NCVT) that works at the National level; at the state level the SCVT works as per the NCVT’s guidelines.
