Nearly all rocks can be classified according to their origin into three major groups. These divisions include igneous rocks sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks. A few rocks are hybrid in nature.
As the science of rocks (petrology) developed many rock names were introduced into the scientific literature. Often a different name was assigned to every rock that showed a slight difference from any known rock.
