Thor Odinson is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Stan Lee artist Jack Kirby and scripter Larry Lieber the character first appeared in the comic book Journey into Mystery #83 (August 1962). Based on the Norse mythological god of the same name Thor is the Asgardian god of thunder and lightning possessing the ability to summon storms and fly with his hammer Mjolnir. A founding member of the superhero team the Avengers Thor has a host of supporting characters and enemies.
Thor's powers come from his Asgardian heritage and his connection to the mystical hammer Mjolnir. Mjolnir can only be lifted by those who are deemed "worthy" by Odin Thor's father and the king of Asgard. When Thor wields Mjolnir he is granted superhuman strength speed durability and the ability to fly. He can also use Mjolnir to generate lightning and other energy blasts.
In addition to his physical powers Thor is also a skilled warrior and a powerful sorcerer. He is proficient in the use of various Asgardian weapons and armor and he has extensive knowledge of Asgardian magic. Thor is also a wise and noble leader and he is dedicated to protecting Asgard and the Nine Realms from threats.
Thor has been featured in numerous Marvel Comics publications including his own solo series as well as team-up titles such as The Avengers The Defenders and The X-Men. He has also appeared in several animated television series and video games.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe Thor is portrayed by Chris Hemsworth. Hemsworth has appeared as Thor in the films Thor (2011) The Avengers (2012) Thor: The Dark World (2013) Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) Doctor Strange (2016 cameo) Thor: Ragnarok (2017) Avengers: Infinity War (2018) Avengers: Endgame (2019) and Thor: Love and Thunder (2022).
