Aerial photography (or aerial view) is the taking of a photograph from an airplane or flying object. Platforms for aerial photography include fixed-wing aircraft aircraft helicopters uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs or drones) balloons blimp and zeppelins rockets pigeons kites parachutes standalone telescopes and vehicle-mounted masts. The attached cameras can be triggered remotely or automatically; a photographer can take handheld photos.

Aerial photography was first implemented by French photographer and balloonist Gaspard-Félix Tournachon in 1858 in Paris France. The oldest preserved aerial photograph is "Boston as the Eagle and the Wild Goose See It." The picture which offers a view of Boston from 609 meters high was shot by James Wallace Black and Samuel Archer King on October 13 1860.

The first examples of kite aerial photography were discovered in 1882 by the British meteorologist E.D. Archibald; French photographer Arthur Batut shot it in 1889. In the same years Cecil Shadbolt developed a method for taking pictures from the basket of a gas balloon including vertically facing down shots. In 1908 Tunisian filmmaker Albert Samama Chikly filmed the first aerial footage using a balloon. The first use of a cinema camera mounted on a heavier-than-air aircraft was in the silent short film Wilbur Wright und seine Flugmaschine shot over Rome on April 24 1909.

Reconnaissance aircraft; The use of aerial photography during warfare developed rapidly as it was equipped with cameras to record enemy movements and defenses. Initially the utility of aerial photography was not fully appreciated and explorations were made by aerial map drawing.

Germany added the first aerial camera Görz to its inventory in 1913. On the other hand the French began the war with a squadron of several Blériot observation aircraft equipped with reconnaissance cameras.

Frederick Charles Victor Laws of the British army began his aerial photography experiments in 1912 and took pictures from the airship. He discovered that vertical photographs taken with an overlap of 60% could create a sense of depth when viewed through a stereoscope. British reconnaissance pilots began using cameras to record their observations in 1914 and photographed all the German trenches at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in 1915. In 1916 the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy took vertical axis aerial photographs over Italy for map-making.

The earliest commercial aerial photography company in Britain was Aerofilms founded in 1919 by two World War I veterans. The company soon entered significant contracts in Africa Asia and the United Kingdom. The company has made vertical photography for survey and mapping purposes since 1921.

Another successful pathfinder of the commercial use of aerial photography is the American Sherman Fairchild. Fairchild founded his own aircraft company Fairchild Aircraft to develop specialized aircraft for high-altitude aerial research missions.
