It gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1922 and was declared a Republic in 1953. With the 2011 Egyptian Revolution Hosni Mubarak who ruled Egypt for 32 years left and the country started the transition to democracy. This process was interrupted by the dismissal of the first President Mohammed Morsi elected on 3 July 2013 in a coup.
It has multiple relations in the international arena. Although the Organization of Islamic Cooperation is a member of the Arab League and the Asian Union it has balanced relations with eastern and western countries.
