Daimyos used the Samurai to gain more ground and increase their strength.
The Samurai were trained to fight on horseback on foot armed or unarmed. They also used arrows. However after the Mongol wars in the 13th century the use of swords by the Samurai gained weight. They even started using spears and sword-shaped spears called naginata.
Samurai would have two swords. The long sword was "daitoo-katana" and the short sword was "shoto-wakizashi." They also had knives called tantos. Samurai often gave names (mei) to their swords and believed in their spirit. Carrying and wielding dual swords was called "daisho."
In 1605 Miyamoto Musashi Japan's most famous Samurai opened a school to train warriors. This master who managed to win over 60 sword fights before turning 30 taught at his school for years. In 1615 another well-known Samurai Tokugawa Ieyasu wrote a book about Samurai and gave information about the peacetime lifestyle of the Samurai.
